Duo lay in the middle of his basement floor, clad in nothing but his boxer shorts. He could feel a bead of perspiration form and begin to trickle down along his temple and drop into his ear. Duo bolted upright, making whining noises and scrubbed the sweat from his ear. Duo spread his legs out wide in front of him and placed his hands on the floor. It was only slightly cooler than his hands, further proof that the heat wave was baking even the earth itself.
Coming downstairs had been Duo's last feeble attempt to take at least edge off the heat. But even his usually meat locker cold basement, seemed stifling.
"Why did the air conditioning have to break now? Duo whined to himself.
Duo frowned and scrunched up his toes. He had absolutely no money, so he couldn't go see a movie and wallow in A/C. There certainly was, no way in hell he was getting within a hundred feet of the mall on a Saturday. But he desperately needed to cool off. There was really no way around it. He was becoming more miserable by the minute and it was only going to get hotter.
A grin slowly spread across Duo's face. He sprang up from the floor and ran up the stairs, giggling madly. He ran out his back door, hissing sharply as his feet touched scorching pavement until he burst into his garage. He looked around and homed in on his goal.
After considerable amounts of tossing junk aside and heaps of cursing, Duo emerged from the garage, a piece of contorted metal in his hands. He bounced over the pavement, trying to avoid resting his feet on the burning concrete too long and grabbed the garden hose. He attached it to his prize and dragged them out to the middle of the backyard. He hummed happily as he bounced back over to the tap and turned the water on. He cheered exuberantly as tiny streams of water shot skyward.
Duo skipped back over the pavement and promptly jumped through the sprinkler's spray. He laughed out loud as the water sprayed him and then looked worriedly down at his shorts. He sighed with relief when he realized they were navy blue and not white. Duo grinned to himself. He was quite happy now that he had a way to stay cool and entertained for the afternoon.
