Trowa put his beer bottle down and leaned back on his seat. The bar wasn't too crowded, but there were enough people to make the ambience lively. The music was old rock songs that almost everyone in the establishment knew by heart, their lips moving and forming the words. Trowa chuckled when he realized that he was doing the same thing.
"Be careful, Trowa, or those girls in the next table are going to think you are singing to them." There was a smirk hidden in Heero's voice.
"Maybe you should try it, then." Trowa picked up his bottle again and took a swig. "You could use some company."
The slight tint of color in the top of Heero's cheeks was the most Trowa had ever seen him blush. Trowa didn't ask, instead he just kept looking at Heero, waiting.
"I have company," Heero finally said. The smirk, now visible in Heero's expression, told Trowa that he hadn't done a good job at hiding his surprise. "Duo," Heero explained, and Trowa almost dropped his beer bottle.
"How long?" They were all friends. The five of them worked together, went out together and practically spent most of their free time with each other. Why hadn't he noticed before?
"Just one week." Heero took a long swig of his beer.
One week wasn't that long but Trowa still thought that he should have noticed something. Suddenly, he started to remember little things that somehow had seemed out of place but that he hadn't paid much attention to back then. Heero watching Duo from the corner of his eye every time he walked by; Duo, keeping his fingers on Heero's elbow longer than usual; the slight, almost imperceptible glare Heero had aimed at Wufei when he and Duo were teasing each other for one thing or another… and Quatre's knowing smile.
Trowa narrowed his eyes. "He knew!"
Heero grinned. "It's impossible to hide things from Quatre."
"I told you when Quatre and I got together." The reproach seemed a little juvenile but Trowa didn't care. He blamed it on the beer.
"Catching you making out in the men's room isn't the same as telling me."
Trowa waved a hand in dismissal. He finished his beer, put it on the table and gave Heero a genuine smile. "Congratulations."
Heero smiled back and nodded in acknowledgement.
"Remember what you told me when Cat and I got together?" Trowa asked, the smile still in place.
"That I would kick your ass if you screwed up." Heero finished his beer too.
Trowa gestured at the waitress to bring another round before turning back to Heero and saying in a low voice, "Remember that."
When the beers arrived, Heero raised his bottle in a silent toast. Trowa followed, took a long swig and leaned back on his chair. "So, who bottoms?"
Trowa knew he would pay for that later, but watching Heero sputter beer through his nose, was definitely worth it.
