Alex glanced at his watch and sighed. Kevin was late. It wasn't as though Alex hadn't known Kevin would be late. After all, he had pathed earlier, and very apologetically, to let Alex know that the project was taking longer than had been anticipated. Alex didn't have a problem with that. He knew that this particular project had a deadline. The SGC ran on a tight budget, and with Senator Kinsey watching them like a hawk of late, almost as though he was waiting for an excuse, any excuse, to cut funding, Alex had accepted that this was more important than the evening they had planned. He ignored the little voice that insisted that it was more important than him.
School didn't go back until Wednesday so they at least had this evening without having to worry about time zones. Alex hated time zones, more than he would ever admit to Kevin. They cut into the time they could spend together. Kevin wouldn't hear of Alex working in the States as he knew how much Alex loved teaching at St. Mark's. Likewise, Kevin had found his niche at the SGC and in the surrounding community, and this was home so moving to New Zealand was not an option. Besides, doing that would not solve anything; their work places still clocked in and out on different time zones. Happiness came at a price, and this was a small one to pay. Except for days like today when it was annoying and depressing as hell.
Kevin's birthday this year was a Monday. Alex would have suggested celebrating it on the weekend before; it was so very rarely that they had the opportunity to spend whole weekends together, but he wanted to make the day special for Kevin, particularly after recent events. Alex felt guilty after what he had put Kevin through, even though his husband had insisted over and over that it wasn't Alex's fault. No, that honour belonged to the arsehole who had almost raped him.
Going into the kitchen, he grabbed a can of beer out of the fridge. Natalie rubbed around his ankles, whining, and he picked her up. She always seemed to know when one of them was unsettled or upset. Alex wasn't sure whether dogs had a sixth sense like a Tomorrow Person but Natalie came close to it, especially where he and Kevin were concerned. "It's okay, girl," he reassured her. "He'll be home soon."
He put her down again, knowing she would follow, and walked into the living room, settling himself on the couch, his feet on the coffee table, Natalie curling up in her basket by the window. Alex had never minded being alone, but lately he'd found it gave him too much time to think. And remember.
Sighing, he switched his attention elsewhere. Kevin would be home soon. It was just bad luck that this had happened today. It wasn't Kevin's fault. He knew Kevin felt bad about it, and Alex refused to let his husband know just how much this had upset him. He felt like an idiot. It wasn't this that was upsetting him, more that he was too damn touchy still and shouldn't be. He'd had time to heal, time to pull himself together to start back at school for the new term, and for the most part he was okay. It was just during times like this, his demons tormented him, ignoring him as he tried to reason with them and drive them away.
Kevin had been very supportive, even pushing his own issues to one side to give Alex the room he needed. Finally, it had been too much and they had both snapped, holding each other, and crying. Alex had never wanted to be responsible for causing Kevin pain, but he knew that was what he had done. Tonight was a way of making up for it, of reminding Kevin just how much he was loved.
It was one truth Alex knew that no matter what ever happened, would never waver. He loved Kevin with everything he was, and would be. Knowing Kevin for who he was behind his mask of calm and precision, had only made that love grow stronger. Kevin hated losing control, but he was a passionate man, caring, protective and ever so slightly possessive.
Alex couldn't help but grin. They were both possessive and overprotective when it came to each other. It was part of who they were, part of the strength of their relationship, but also a trait that had been used against them on more than one occasion.
Putting down the beer, Alex shivered. He would not allow his thoughts to go there now. He couldn't. This day, or what was left of it was for Kevin. Kevin had given him so much, helping him to see himself in a different light, a glimpse of what Kevin claimed was his potential. Lying in Kevin's arms, Alex felt safe and very much loved. Kevin was his life. With their bond they were literally in each other's minds, and neither would have it any other way.
Alex looked up and smiled at the familiar sensation of a teleport. Kevin returned the smile, bending down to kiss his husband tenderly. Alex leaned into the kiss, pulling Kevin into his lap and wrapping his arms around him. [Welcome home, love.]
With Kevin home and in his arms, his fears and memories faded. They not only had this evening but the rest of their lives together and in this moment, that was all that mattered.
